Oriental Rat Flea

Fleas may threaten your health by carrying diseases and parasites. Flea bites will cause welts and discomfort from skin reactions. Fleas undergo complete metamorphosis. Their white oval eggs are laid on the host, but fall off as the host moves about.

Whitish, legless larvae eat organic matter in the home, including undigested blood excreted from feeding adults. Larvae molt near egg laying site into a prepupal stage then develops a protective cocoon.

After molting, the pre-emergent adult remains inside the cocoon up to 140 days. When signaled to emerge by environmental cues such a direct pressure on the cocoon, vibration, increased temperature, or increased concentrations of carbon dioxide. Length of life, controlled by humidity, temperature, and available food may range up to 20 months.

Control Tactics:
Vacuuming upholstered furniture and surfaces limits food & lifts carpet fiber enhancing insecticide penetration. Decreasing humidity is also helpful. Treatment includes both indoor and outdoor areas using space sprays, residual liquids, and insect growth regulators. Areas the pets frequent indoors and out are treated. Pets and people should not enter the treated area until all is dry. Treating for adult fleas on the pet, and washing or discarding bedding should be coordinated with the structure treatment.
